Have you ever imagined what there was when there was no universe? I have questioned myself about this innumerable times since I was a kid.
We all know there was a big bang, and then in the next few seconds the universe was created. But what was there before the big bang? Like something has to exist before something. In the classic egg-chicken dilemma, we always assume someone out of the two to be present for the other to appear. So how can you say there was nothing? Something must be.
I have tried to imagine this nothingness like how it would look, and every fucking time it is the same image - the one of the ‘space’, the big black cloth studded with stars. But isn't space a part of the universe that was created after the bang? And still if I assume it to be space, then that means there was an universe before the big bang, which maybe gave birth to ours. And if I take this as the answer, but then the next question is how the previous universe got created. From the one before the previous one? But again what created the one before the previous one? The one before the-one-before-the-previous-one? And what about the one before the-one-before-the-previous-one? Okay the one before the the one-before-the-one-before-the-previous-one? Shit.
And then I lose the trail of where I started and get all confused and then have a headache everytime. At this point I can say for sure that the nothingness before the creation of the universe is not something our minds can get a hold of.
Back then when I started having these questions, I did not know of the big bang theory, and thought I may get an answer someday when I would grow up. But till now there is no answer, at least one as popular as the big bang.
This one persistent question really messed up with my belief in God. This is where I think my problem with the God concept started, which to this day is not resolved. If someone created all of this, who created Him or Her? Like someone must have. What is their origin? Even if it is some superior being, an entity beyond every faculty of our imagination, still It must been created from something.
Now I have got to end this thing abruptly because this is what I do everytime I start mulling over this mess.
